21 May

A bonanza!

This week the plants have been arriving thick and fast – cauliflower, broccoli, purple sprouting broccoli, tomatoes, cucumber, climbing french beans and trailing fuchias – I have to say, this is gardening at its most convenient. All the above arrived safe and sound in their boxes ready for a week or so nurturing before they go out in the garden.
Today was glorious! The sun shone and I beavered away, planting out my runner beans and generally tidying up the tunnel for more planting. It is going great guns in there – the lettuce and rocket I am harvesting every day, so am having to invent lots of exciting salad recipes. My dahlias are sprouting nicely, all ready for plating out in a couple of weeks when I can be sure that there will be no more frost… potato tops were nipped the week before last and went brown, but they seem to have recovered much to my relief. The purple sprouting broccoli is going great guns and I am picking bunches every day.
On the flower front, my tulips are at last in full bloom and looking fantastic. My only dilemma is that I am ready to plant my summer bedding and the tulips and pansies are looking at their best after their arrested growth over the winter. I will have to take the plunge in the next week or so, but in the meantime I will enjoy their display.
