Simple DIY Christmas Ideas!

Snow Globes

Making simple snow globes are a brilliant way to bring your family together this Christmas. These globes are easy enough for children to help create but elegant enough to be proudly placed in any home. They also make fantastic presents or thank you gifts if you are stuck for ideas!

What you need:

  • Mason jars – any size or shape. Just make sure your mini Christmas tree can fit.
  • Mini Christmas tree – the kind used as cake decorations or figurines.
  • Super glue
  • Fake snow
  • Water
  • Liquid glycerin
  • Glitter

Start by opening the jar and glueing your tree to the inside of the lid. Leave over night or for a good few hours to ensure its in place. Fill the jar with distilled water almost to the top (remember the tree has to go in too) and add a few drops of liquid glycerin. Add the fake snow and lots of glitter. Screw the lid (with the Christmas tree attached) on tightly and give it a shake!

Christmas Ornaments

Christmas ornaments are something that we buy and treasure for years. They can represent memories, be given as gifts and definitely brighten up our homes. Home made ornaments are the perfect activity to do today with your children and grandchildren.

What you need:

  • Clear baubles with an opening at the top.
  • Tinsel/Fake snow/glitter/foliage
  • Jewellery making letters
  • Pencil
  • Thread

Start by threading together some jewellery-making letters, if its a gift, use the person’s name, otherwise just pick simple Christmas-themed words. Push whatever material you want to make up the body of your bauble in, this could be tinsel, fake snow or some foliage from your garden. Put it in place and then push the threaded letters in, making sure to put them in the right place using a pencil or other device.

Add ribbon or twine around your bauble and hang on your tree. Making lots of these and putting them together in a bowl will also make a fantastic centre piece.

Hanging Pinecones

One of the most simple and effective Christmas decorations you can create. Pinecones are readily available from your gardens, local parks and neighbours and really are the epitome of festive decorations.

What you will need:

  • Collection of different sized pinecones (try to make sure they are all quite large!)
  • Ribbon, either all the same colour or different colours and patterns.
  • Small ribbon or ready-made bows.

Attach slightly different lengths of ribbon to the top of your pinecones with super glue and leave to dry over night. In the morning attach the smaller ribbons to your pinecones to cover any obvious glue marks. Gather the pinecones together and decide how you want them to hang. Now is the time to make the ribbon shorter, if it helps the pinecones hang better. Tie them together at the top with a large bow and hang them anywhere!
