Whats for tea?

Potatoes! I have just uncovered my first batch of potatoes.

I am not entirely sure when the best time to dig them up is, however as the plant was starting to wilt after a lashing of rain I thought I would do it today. Mainly because I am far too impatient to wait any longer and I just needed an excuse to unearth the potatoes.

My reward was slightly disappointing, but as they were grown in a bag I don’t think I can expect much more than that. I do have a couple more bags and a couple more pots to go so we should be ok for potatoes for a few weeks.

I am really starting to think about getting an allotment in the future. I am a little daunted by the thought of managing it as well as a garden and two children but I would really like to be able to grow more of everything and really keep the family fed with home grown veg for longer than a couple of weeks. I am happy with the amount of veg that I am able to grow in the containers, even if we only have a healthy supply of courgettes at the moment! But it would be nice to have more space and a designated vegetable plot.

The reason I am thinking of an allotment is purely the variety and quantity that I could grow. The children love the fact that they can see what is being grown and can pretty much eat it straight away. Its just a shame I didn’t have any luck with my sweetcorns this year as a constant supply of corn on the cob would have been a welcome sight for my family.

Realistically I think that until my daughter is a little bit older I will make do with my container vegetables and then think about an allotment in a couple of years. I will however continue to think up ways of increasing the fruit and veg yield with the space I have in my garden.

At least by the time I get an allotment the children will be old enough to help out with the digging!
